On my first trip to India (and one that was solely within Tamil Nadu & Pondicherry) I wanted to visit a Hill Station. So after a brief stop in Madurai I taxied up to Kodaikanal. I booked Villa Retreat relatively last minute and took the least expensive room. I found this place to be very charming indeed. Sham (General Manager) was obliging and friendly and as were the rest of the staff. The service was just right: not over bearing, helpful, and full of interesting conversation if you wanted it. The room was relatively simple but comfortable and with a decent bathroom. It's worth saying that the set up is more a set of rooms in a complex of heritage buildings as opposed to traditional hotel. For me, this really added to my visit to Kodaikanal, given its history. I did, by the way, pop into The Carlton and found it to be a fairly typical high-end, big, hotel. Villa Retreat, I thought, had a more special ambiance - not to mention the great views from the terrace and breakfast room (lovely fresh South Indian food too). The view from the terrace and breakfast room make you forget that you don't have a view in that least expensive room (I think most, if not all, the other rooms have views). So all-in-all I was pretty taken by Kodaikanal and Villa Retreat. Sometimes when booking hotels in India I found it quite difficult to find interesting places to stay that were comfortable (by UK standards) but not chain hotels or the most expensive hotel in the town. Villa Retreat struck a great balance of quality, comfort, price and ambiance - I was delighted to have found myself there. Thanks and well done!
I can just say WOW !!! Stunning Views, Colorful garden, Cozy rooms and delicious food.. and guess what they are less then 5 min walk from all the major spots within Kodaikanal. They even packed us couple of saplings from their garden that we got back with us.. Big Thanks to Mr Shyam and his boys for making our stay such wonderful experience...
We stayed at Amherst by the lake for three nights. It was a three bedroom cottage very close to the Kodai lake. The staff (Sumathi and Subbu) were very helpful and made the entire stay a very comfortable and a pleasant one. The cottage had lush green vegetation and the kids in our family enjoyed watching the turkey and the chickens in the cottage garden. I would always recommend this place to all my friends and family.
Wonderful place for stay in Kodaikanal. Great hospitality and excellent service. The best location in Kodaikanal. The staff and the management provided personal attention and extremely helpful. The organizing of trips around was very well done
stayed there for three days. excellent location.. excellent staff... relaxed environment.. enjoy excellent views of the valleys from the lawn and the dining area ( the view from the coakers walk) leisurely sitting and sipping on a hot cup of coffee.. the twinkling lights of the villages down in the valley at night also make a awesome sight .. a clear night view will take your breath away esp if you are with your loved one :-P (we were lucky to have a clear full moon night)... If you have valley facing rooms(room no 108 and 105) then you neednt come to the lawn also.. (though the lawn has a charm of its own).. coakers walk is 1 min walk.. lake is 5 mins.. all the famed dining places are around 10-15 mins relaxed walking distance.. not to mention Mr. Shyam, the manager of this place.. he will make sure you are comfortable and will guide you throughout your stay.. overall a great stay.. stands true to its name.. certainly a retreat...
To start with the place has an amazing view. It is a real fest to the eyes. One would feel relaxed and calm away from the normal hustle bustle of the city life. The room has an amazing fragrance each time one enters the room. The rooms and the bathrooms are really clean. A rejuvenating experience :-)
My husband and I were guests at Villa Retreat for 3 nights. Its a beautiful resort, a heritage site. Clean and well maintained rooms with a lovely view of the hills and the valley.. The sunrise from the room bay window was breathtaking. Clean and good food. Shyam the GM and Shiva the restaurant manager were very helpful and courteous. Very efficient and courteous staff. The resort is close to the lake, Bryant's Park, and the famous Coakers walk. All in all, a very memorable stay at the resort.
My wife and I stayed here for 12 nights on a holiday, around mid-May, 2018. We had an excellent experience, as detailed below: 1. Nestled near the top of the town, this is a compact hotel of only 18 rooms with a beautiful valley view at the rear, visible from the dining area. There is a sit-out area to dine, enjoying the view. 2. If you are looking for idyllic beauty, peace and quiet, salubrious air of the mountains etc, do avoid a summer visit to Kodai; unless of course you really want to the escape the heat of the plains. You would run into a crush of people and clogged streets, somewhat dirty. The saving grace is that, once you are inside the premises of Villa Retreat, it is clean, pleasant and relatively tranquil. 3. One outstanding feature of this hotel is the consistent and unfailing courtesy and service attitude of the personnel, always responding with a smile. That is not easy to accomplish in India. 4. Though of a limited variety, the food is good, made to order. One unusual and user-friendly aspect is that the charges are the same whether food is served in the dining hall or in the room. The dining staff is to be commended for their excellent service, especially the steward Shiva. 5. The front desk is attentive, responsive and helpful. 6. Each room has an independent geyser, always on, thus assuring 24-hour hot water supply; an important comfort in a hill station. Power does fail off and on, but is quickly restored with Genset Backup. A few repairs involving electric sockets that can't receive a charger or a plug were quickly fixed. 7. The hotel offers daily, starting at 8 AM, gratis, a one-hour Nature Walk. It is a pleasant experience in verdant surroundings. It is a nearly 6 KM walk that involves mild climbing for some distance. 8. Having been expanded around a Heritage Building, the hotel is really cute with the exterior of several rooms clad with creeping ivy! 9. A very special mention must be made of the energetic and present-everywhere Resident Manager, Mr. Shyam Kumar. He meets and greets every guest, goes round the tables in the dining area, being very informative and helpful. Having observed at close quarters over many days, I can say that a large part of the many good things in the hotel arises from his dedication and untiring attention to detail. It is fortunate for any employer to have such a commitment. You can see his picture alongside, against an ivy lined wall. Here are a few things that could be somewhat unsettling or disappointing: 1. WiFi is available only in the Lobby area and not in the rooms. Though the hotel is upfront about this in their website, it is still an inconvenience. My AirTel voice signal here was strong, but the data signal was inconsistent. 2. The housekeeping (room cleaning etc) is an area for improvement. While one batch seems to do a good job, another is sketchy.
Had the most wonderful n best stay at Villa Retreat. We were there for a week. I am so glad i choose this property to stay. 1)Beautifully location. This property has the most amazing view. One could just sit and admire the beauty of this place. My friends thought i was in Europe :) 2)Amazing food - we did go out to eat but nothing compared to what we ate at the resort. 3)Wonderful and awesome staff - Rigth from reservation i want to thank Prasad & Anto. Mr. Shaym (GM) just know how to take care of every guest. Reception Joseph & Nazir, Tour guide Vinod, Dining are Shiva & our driver Anand who picked us up from the airport. There is nothing to complain about. We would like to come back to this place again. Thank u
VillaRetreat was awesome for us across stay, the quality of food, proximity to sightseeing places and most importantly the trip to the cheese farm, soap making and the private water fall walk plus early morning nature walks
